George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) war ein deutsch-britischer Komponist des Barock, dessen musikalisches Genie die Grenzen seiner Zeit überschritt. Geboren in Halle, verbrachte er den Großteil seines Lebens in London, wo er sich einbürgern ließ und seinen Namen anglisierte. Handel ist vor allem für seine majestätischen Oratorien und Opern bekannt, wobei sein Meisterwerk "Messiah" zu den wertvollsten Beispielen der europäischen Sakralmusik zählt. Seine Kompositionen, darunter auch die "Concerti Grossi", zeugen von seiner unvergänglichen Meisterschaft und bleiben bis heute ein fester Bestandteil des klassischen Repertoires.
